The Universal
Operating System
Debian is a free operating system comprised entirely of free and open-source software, maintained and developed by the Debian Project. Trusted by millions worldwide since 1993.
Built on Core Principles
Debian stands on a foundation of freedom, stability, and community-driven development.
Rock-Solid Stability
Debian Stable is renowned for its reliability. Packages are thoroughly tested before release, making it the ideal choice for servers and production environments where uptime is critical.
100% Free Software
Debian adheres strictly to the Debian Free Software Guidelines (DFSG). Every package in the main repository is freely redistributable and meets the highest standards of free software.
Multi-Architecture
From x86 to ARM, MIPS to RISC-V โ Debian supports over 10 hardware architectures, making it truly universal. Run it on everything from Raspberry Pi to supercomputers.
Massive Package Repository
With over 65,000 packages in its repositories, Debian offers one of the largest software collections of any distribution. From system utilities to development tools, everything is available via apt.
Community Governed
Debian is developed by a global community of volunteers following the Debian Social Contract and the Debian Constitution. No single company controls the project โ it belongs to everyone.
Foundation for Many Distros
Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Kali, and hundreds of other distributions are based on Debian. Its robust architecture and dpkg package management system have become the standard for Linux distributions.
Debian Release Tracks
Three release branches serve different needs โ from maximum stability to cutting-edge packages.
Stable
Debian 12 โ Bookworm
The current stable release. Packages are frozen and only receive security updates. Ideal for production servers, desktops, and any environment where reliability is paramount. Released approximately every 2 years.
Testing
Debian 13 โ Trixie
The next stable release in the making. Packages are newer than Stable but still undergo quality checks. Good for desktop users who want more recent software while maintaining reasonable stability.
Unstable (Sid)
Debian Sid
The development branch with the latest packages. "Sid" is not a rolling release โ it's a snapshot of the latest uploads. Use with caution; best for experienced users who want to test and contribute.
